What is a mod cut?

The mod haircut comes from the 1960s British mod movement. Its hallmarks: a longer fringe falling onto the forehead, a rounded, closed shape and length falling over the ears and nape. The classic version was solid and heavy. Today's mod cut is lighter: we remove weight internally with texture, so the hair moves and never looks like a helmet. Who does it suit?

It looks best on straight or slightly wavy hair of medium to high density. It can be tailored to curly hair too, building the shape on the natural fall of the curls. If your hair is fine, we'll discuss at the consultation which length and how much texture will work for you.

How we cut it

First we look at your hair density, your crown and your reference photo if you've brought one. We build the shape with scissors: length and outline first, then the fringe, and finally we work the texture in from the inside. The sides and nape are scissor cut too – no fade.

Mod cut, mullet or flow?

• Mod cut: the length is more even all round; the fringe and rounded shape are the point.
• Mullet: shorter at the front and sides, longer at the nape.
• Flow: longer hair falling back, without a fringe.

Styling at home

Towel-dry until half-dry, add a little sea salt spray and push the fringe forward with your fingers or a hairdryer. For more hold, work a pea-sized amount of matte clay or matte pomade into the ends. A mod cut looks best styled loosely.
